Education without borders: integration of Ukraine and Romania through knowledge
In border regions, there is always a sense of two worlds next to each other: your usual routes, familiar faces, and another country, another language, other rules very close by. People cross the border every day, but they don't always feel that they can be part of the life of the neighboring community. The reason is simple: when a language barrier stands between a person and an opportunity, integration becomes a difficult and sometimes exhausting process.
It is from this reality that our Learn Across Borders project grew. It is dedicated to improving access to education and creating conditions in which movement between two countries becomes a natural part of development rather than stress. The project is implemented with the support of Interreg VI-A NEXT Romania-Ukraine 2021-2027, funded by the European Union and co-financed by the participating countries.
Partners from both banks of the Danube are working on the initiative. From Ukraine, it is the Association of Local Governments "EU Strategy for the Danube Region", which represents communities in four oblasts and has been developing cross-border cooperation for many years. From the Romanian side, the Tulcea County Youth Foundation, an organization with deep experience in working with youth, educational programs and social initiatives.
We focus on people caught between two languages and two education systems. These are Ukrainian refugees who temporarily live in Tulcea and need support to adapt to the new community. They are also residents of Odesa region of Romanian origin who want to deepen their knowledge of their ancestral language and find their way in the common Ukrainian-Romanian space.
We create learning environments that will help these people feel more confident: language courses, integration classes, counseling, events that unite the two cultures. All of this works not as separate activities, but as a holistic system where everyone can find their own way to regain control over their own lives through education and communication.
The project is still gaining momentum, but it is already evident that it is shaping an environment where the border is no longer a line of demarcation. It is important for us that in the future people overcome language difficulties as confidently as they cross the Danube bridge - simply, without fear and with the feeling that this is a path to new opportunities.
